My thoughts about personal computing have moved more toward virtualization, being a Sr. Systems Engineer for 20 years I have seen this convergence. I view each user having a web based system that contains documents, videos, audio, books etc. Each system would have modules that users can insert into their system. These modules allow access and hold the data for each system. For example you make a post on Twitter and the data is stored in your Cloud PC and then posted to twitter. That way if you can delete and purge your twitter account but still have access to the data that you posted. You would also have a true archive of you posts on all services.
Access to your CloudPC would be from any device. This device can be Phone, Tablet, Thin Client, Playstation, XBox, Smart TV or Roku. You notice that I did not include a PC. This environment would be essentially a Cloud PC eliminating a users requirement to purchase a computer. I see 70% to 80% of users on the internet fitting into the category for this type of access. For example my wife has been without a computer for a year. She acesses everything through her phone. She uses facebook, twitter, email, youtube all through her phone. I could also see a Home WiFi router with a thin client built into it for access to the Cloud PC.
This Cloud PC would remove all of the things that users hate dealing with the most. Data backup, Virus protection, windows or mac os upgrades, and buying a new computer. The Could PC data would be backed up, virus scanned, portable and exportable. It would be you.
